Colorado’s football team, led by Coach Deion Sanders, has stopped answering questions from a Denver Post reporter due to repeated personal attacks.
“Due to ongoing personal attacks on the football program and Coach Prime, the CU Athletic Department and football team have chosen not to answer questions from Denver Post columnist Sean Keeler at football events, according to Matt Schubert of the Denver Post.”
When asked for examples, a CU sports staffer mentioned several terms and phrases, like “false prophet,” “Deposition Deion,” “Planet Prime,” “Bruce Lee of B.S.,” “Deion Kool-Aid,” and “circus.”
During CUโs media day on August 9, Sanders shared his thoughts with Keeler, according to David Ubben of The Athletic.
“Why do you keep this up if you donโt like us?โ Sanders asked. โI really want to know. Why engage with something you dislike? It’s hard for me to connect with something or someone I donโt care for. Whatโs going on?”
According to the Denver Post, Keeler remains approved for all football events and can inquire about other CU sports. The indefinite ban is specifically tied to his questioning practices.
According to The Athletic, Sanders’ contract limits him to talking with “mutually agreed-upon media.”
This isnโt the first time a reporter covering a Sanders-coached team has been banned. The Denver Post noted a similar incident when Sanders was at Jackson State.
In July 2021, a Jackson Clarion-Ledger reporter was banned from covering the Jackson State football team at Media Day. This happened right after the reporter wrote about a domestic violence charge involving one of the team’s star recruits.
Sanders, a Pro Football Hall of Famer and former MLB player, starts his second season with Colorado on August 29 against North Dakota State.
