Travis Hunter, Will Johnson Lead 2024 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List

On Tuesday, 75 players from 56 schools got named to the Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List for the upcoming 2024 college football season.

Here are two standout names from the list: Travis Hunter, a Colorado cornerback, and Will Johnson, a cornerback from Michigan.

  • Travis Hunter, CB, Colorado
  • Will Johnson, CB, Michigan
  • Denzel Burke, CB, Ohio State
  • Caleb Downs, S, Ohio State
  • Malachi Moore, S, Alabama
  • Harold Perkins, LB, LSU
  • JT Tuimoloau, DE, Ohio State
  • James Pearce, DE, Tennessee
  • Mykel Williams, DE, Georgia
  • Xavier Watts, S, Notre Dame

The Bronko Nagurski Trophy goes to the top defensive player in college football each year, chosen by the Football Writers Association of America.

Since 1993, the Bronko Nagurski Trophy has honored top college football players, many of whom later shined in the NFL.

This list features stars like Warren Sapp, Charles Woodson, Terrell Suggs, Aaron Donald, Chase Young, and more.

Last season, Notre Dame’s Xavier Watts became the first defensive back since 2003 to win the Bronko Nagurski Trophy.

On this year’s list, standout names in focus are Hunter, Johnson, Watts, and Ohio State’s Denzel Burke and Caleb Downs from the defensive backfield.

Hunter stands out because he plays offense and defense under coach Deion Sanders at Colorado.

Last season, Hunter excelled both as a wide receiver and cornerback. He caught 57 passes for 721 yards and five touchdowns, while also making 22 tackles, grabbing three interceptions, and defending five passes on defense.

Hunter’s future in the NFL is uncertain, but if he’s a contender for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy in 2024, cornerback might be his best position.

Johnson had an impressive season with Michigan, making 27 tackles, four interceptions, and defending four passes. With another strong year, he could become the top cornerback pick in the 2025 NFL draft.

Watts could join the elite if he wins the Bronko Nagurski Trophy again, with seven interceptions last season.

Only Northwestern’s Pat Fitzgerald and Alabama’s Anderson have won the Bronko Nagurski Trophy twice.
